Return of Latter Days

(Prepare for link overload… I’m only doing it because some people said they didn’t know what I was referring to. It’s only to help if you are interested in further information.)

I just re-found a little treasure trove of Disney stamps and Crayola Crayons. Dating these artifacts is a challenge, but with the use of radiocarbon dating from paper residue left on the objects, I can safely say that these items were last used when I was about 3-4 years old. Shockingly, they are still sealed in the same plastic “Ziploc” bag my Nana gave me so as not to lose this precious loot, along with the thumb tacks she gave me so that the stamps wouldn’t get my fingers all “inky” (talk about trust for a 3 year old!). Each stamp block is roughly 1×1″, and as typical Disney goes, the stamps themselves are either pink, assigned for The Little Mermaid stamps, and purple, assigned for the Snow White stamps. I am not positive if you can tell, but the Crayola Crayons are made with the glitter so they rub with shimmer! I recall this crayon set having more colors but chances are my sister may have gotten a hold of them when we were younger. Enjoy…

For those of you who know me closely, you probably know how much I hate Disney for its portrayal of minorities, women, their response to one’s own “femininity” and its overall impact on developing minds. Of course artists today are constantly paying homage and loving knods towards such artists as Jeff Koons, Robert Rauschenberg and Cy Twombly for challenging notions of kitsch, childhood development and pop culture, so I will be taking my time to choose exactly how to handle this new subject matter. If you have ideas or artists to reference, please let me know…

You might be interested in the artist Ghada Amer. She is a middle eastern artist who addresses the taboo of sexuality and ideals of feminism in her artwork, which is mostly comprised of drawings made with strings. I couldn’t find this in a recent search, but she also references Disney princesses in her work. Islam+sexuality+Disney princesses= I think you will be intrigued.
